Holy Cross School Renovation

In early January 2023, Built Construction Group began a project for Archdiocese of Wellington, renovating the Holy Cross School in Miramar. The renovation improves the design of the school building, providing better access to its amenities and improving thermal insulation. This increases the building’s longevity and keeps the school children warmer through winter months.

Our work includes raising the roofline of one section to match the rest; installing new internal membrane guttering and increasing falls to improve the stormwater system; replacing rusted mechanical fittings and rotten timbers, including floors and walls; and installing double-glazed windows throughout.

The adjacent building is one of the oldest buildings in Mirimar. The gutter linking this building to the main school building is being rebuilt, exposing some incredible 100-year-old timbers.

The site set-up needed to be done extremely well for safety, since the school is in operation during the renovation. The work and preparation of materials has to be carried out entirely within the perimeter fencing, and there are children using the playground and moving between classrooms.

All vehicles in and out must be marshalled, and there are times when vehicles can’t be brought in due to school activities.

There will be between two and six builders working on the renovation. The subcontractors assisting include:

• Scaffolders – tenting an area for roofing work and providing access
• Plumbers – for drainage and gas alterations
• Window joiners – installing new aluminium framing for the windows
• Roofers – installing roof membrane
• Painters and plasterers – for interior and exterior decoration
• Electricians – wiring for power and lighting
• Floor covering specialists – for carpet replacement.

We’ve established a good relationship and communications with the school. We’re also working well with the architects and project engineer.

We’re currently on track to complete the project by June 2023. However, we’re experiencing delays of several weeks with the scaffolding team at present.
